The Amazigh World Congress at the UN

The Amazigh World Congress will participate in the 24th session

of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues

The Amazigh World Congress (CMA) will participate in the 24th session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, which will take place from April 21 to May 2, 2025, at UN Headquarters in New York. The main theme of this session is "the implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples within States and the United Nations system."

The CMA is scheduled to make several interventions during the plenary sessions to alert the United Nations and other stakeholders, particularly regarding the dispossession of Amazigh lands, territories, and natural resources, the repeated violations of their linguistic and cultural rights, and the serious issue of repression and human rights abuses they suffer.

At the same time, the CMA has scheduled bilateral meetings with several United Nations mandate holders, including Mr. Albert Barume, Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and Ms. Margaret Satterthwaite, Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers. The CMA will also participate in several side events on issues in which it is involved, such as strengthening the participation of indigenous peoples within the UN, the International Decade of Indigenous Languages, the issue of rights to land and natural resources, and human rights. Regarding the latter, the CMA intends to draw attention to the serious situation of Amazigh political prisoners in Morocco and Algeria, and particularly the plight of those sentenced to death in that country.

Thus, while hundreds of thousands of Amazigh will participate in the Tafsut Imazighen demonstrations – the Amazigh Spring – on April 20th in the Tamazgha countries and the diaspora to demand their fundamental rights, the CMA will bring their voices and their demands to the heart of the world's nations.
